Our main entrance is at Bay 4, on the south side of the building complex (facing the Durham Freeway overpass). These doors are open to the public from 7:30am-5:30pm Monday-Friday. The Bay 6 south doors remain open until 7:30pm Monday-Friday. Duke students, staff, and faculty can swipe into the building after hours with their DukeCard. Please contact an FHI staff person if you have questions about DukeCard access. Extended public access can be arranged for evening and weekend events.

Accessibility
The accessible entrance is at Bay 6, on the south side of Smith Warehouse. Enter, and turn right to go to the FHI in Bays 4 and 5. You will reach Bay 5 first from this entrance, and can continue to Bay 4.

Parking
The parking lot on the south side of the Smith Warehouse can be accessed from the Maxwell/Buchanan or Maxwell/Campus Drive intersections. The lot offers 3 options:

  • 1 ungated metered area open to all visitors at the Buchanan entrance across from Bay 1. The meter is in effect from 7am to 9pm weekdays and 9am to 9pm weekends. The first 30 minutes is free – you can obtain a dashboard pass at the meter. Thereafter the rate is $2 per hour.
  • A central gated area, accessible by card swipe to Duke faculty, students and staff after 5:00pm on weekdays and all day on weekends. (Duke faculty and staff with premium-level parking passes can swipe into the Smith lot during business hours.)

Additional parking for FHI events is available after 5pm on weekdays and all day on weekends at the gravel lot across from Smith on Buchanan, immediately adjacent to the railroad.
